Samsung Gear VR review: Virtual reality for the masses has arrived

Affordable virtual reality is here, but you need a Samsung phone to hop aboard.

The Gear VR's relatively low price belies a compelling VR experience, and the games are quickly catching up to the hype. The headset is fairly light, and offers a completely cordless experience.

It only works with some recent Samsung phones. The mobile VR experience still pales in comparison to more robust upcoming PC- and console-based options.

The Gear VR is the best virtual-reality gadget you can buy right now, and a great way to jump into the world of VR gaming and entertainment -- just make sure you own a compatible Samsung phone first.

Samsung's $99 Gear VR launches in November, adds virtual reality to all new Samsung phones (hands-on)

Think you'll need to spend thousands of dollars on a powerful PC before you set foot in a virtual world? Maybe not: This November, Samsung's $99 headset will let you do it with any new Samsung smartphone.

It's worth noting that smartphone VR experiences like the Gear VR aren't nearly as immersive as what you can get with a dedicated virtual-reality headset like the Oculus Rift. While you can turn your head in virtual reality with a Cardboard or a Gear...

Review: Samsung Gear VR (Gear VR 3, late-2015)

It's been an interesting year for entertainment, and the next few years promise to be even more curious, as virtual reality goes beyond that of science fiction into something real and usable thanks to Samsung and Oculus.

Great entry level price to the world of VR; Much lighter than previous generations; Supports more than one phone, with a small switch changing it from the small phones to the big phones; Touchpad now offers moulded directional pad making it easier to...

Lenses can fog up when it's warm; Can hurt the bridge of a nose, but nowhere near as much as other generations of the headset; Streamed videos aren't anywhere near as reliable for immersion as you'll want;

Samsung Gear VR review - immerse yourself in 360 degree pictures and videos

Samsung has just released the third generation version of the Gear VR headset to deliver a mobile virtual reality experience with the company's latest high quality smartphones. The latest Gear VR model is compatible with Samsung's Galaxy Note5, the S6...

Review: Samsung Gear VR

Samsung has a tendency to chase trends, so when the Gear VR was announced, we couldn't help but roll our eyes. What on earth was Samsung doing getting into virtual reality? Silly us. More than a year later, it's Samsung that looks like the trendsetter.

It has limitations, but the Gear VR really delivers on the promise and power of virtual reality.

Awesome! must try!

I absolutely love my Samsung gear VR that came with my Galaxy S8+. The first attempt to set it up took longer than usual as I wasn't clipping the phone in correctly and at one stage the phone fell out! Apart from the first time you try it, you...

A bit of a gimmick but works ok

Got it with my phone. Have access to a proper HTC Vive VR at work and this pales in comparison. However it retails for a lot cheaper. I have mixed feelings, on one hand it showcases VR technology, and makes it accessible. On the other hand it's only a...

Good if you already have a Samsung phone

This product works great, and is well worth the money for you already have a Samsung phone that fits. The picture quality is good but does have a screendoor effect, watching animated moves looks best. There isn't much content otherwise, most of the...

Great Product, however not worth it.

I got this for free with a Samsung Galaxy s8+. Prior to this, I had used a Google cardboard for the 'VR experience', however, it was rather mediocre compared to the Gear VR. The tracking works great, however, the lack of positional tracking removes...

Dont bother getting it just.

While I think future versions will be excellent the 2016 model is not, the lenses are so blurry it makes you feel very sick, and it's a pain to navigate the menus. Overall it has a lot of potential but unless you can pick it up for about $40 or less...
