Fujifilm GFX 50R Review | Trusted Reviews

Fujifilm's new medium format camera combines a huge sensor with rangefinder-style handling. Is it the dream camera for documentary photographers?

Masses of details in images ; Relatively light body ; Robust build ; Great JPEGs straight out of camera ; Two cards slots

Not the easiest body to handle ; No 4K video recording ; Small AF lever a little fiddly ; EVF can show aliasing with fine details ; No sensor-based image stabilisation

The GFX 50R won’t be for everyone – even those who can afford it – but if you need to be relatively mobile without compromising on image quality, this deserves to be on your shortlist.

Fujifilm GFX 50R

The Fujifilm GFX 50R matches the imaging capabilities of its fraternal twin, the GFX 50S, but is better styled for use outside the studio.

51MP medium format sensor. Rangefinder-style design. Tilting touch LCD. Dust and splash protection. Film Simulation modes. Dual UHS-II slots.

Doesn't balance well with larger lenses. Screen articulation limited to one axis. Autofocus doesn't compete with 35mm cameras.

Bottom Line: The Fujifilm GFX 50R matches the imaging capabilities of its fraternal twin, the GFX 50S, but is better styled for use outside the studio.

Fujifilm GFX 50R Review

Fujifilm's GFX 50R takes the image quality from the existing 50S model and wraps it in a new body with new controls and a lower price of entry. Is that enough to tempt you to pick one up for yourself? Find out how the GFX 50R performs in our full review.

The GFX 50R is the least expensive medium format digital camera available. Like the Pentax 645Z it benefits hugely from inheriting a interface that's been subjected to the evolutionary pressures of the mass market. This means the GFX is as easy to use...

Fujifilm GFX 50R review: bigger isn’t always best

Fujifilm's GFX 50R looks new, but is familiar underneath

Compact, familiar design ; Same film simulations as Fujifilm’s other cameras ; Above average battery life ; Least expensive way to get a modern medium format digital camera

Slow autofocus ; Slow, continuous shooting speed ; Not as good in low light as smaller cameras

That makes the 50R a bit disappointing if you were hoping to use it as a medium format camera on the go. It still performs its best in slow, deliberate environments, such as in a studio or on a landscape photographer’s tripod. Despite it looking like...

Fujifilm GFX 50R First Impressions Review

The GFX 50R is a 50MP rangefinder-style mirrorless camera. It borrows heavily from the existing 50S model but in a smaller body and at a lower price. How does it differ?

Fujifilm GFX 50R

What We Love. Medium format film shooters need not despair any longer. That is, if the only thing that's keeping them from switching is the high price point of these digital medium formats on the market these days. At $4,499--less than $1000 than its...

Fujifilm GFX 50R review

Glorious medium-format made more affordable

Massive medium-format sensor ; Tilting screen ; Inbuilt viewfinder

Video restricted to Full HD ; Big and heavy ; Expensive

Medium format isn’t suited to everybody - it’s big, it’s not cheap and it’s cumbersome - but the files are bloody gorgeous. By reducing the price, Fujifilm brings medium format within the realms of mass affordability - we’re hooked.

Fujifilm GFX 50R review: Hefty and unwieldy, but it takes some cracking photos

The 50R produces astonishing images, but it will cause you no shortage of pain in the process

Phenomenal image quality ; Packed with features

Weighty and tiring to hold ; Irritatingly difficult to use

In our experience, the 50R was not a particularly fun camera to use. Autofocus takes a long time, and even when it’s done, depth of field is so marginal you have to be utterly pedantic to come anywhere near guaranteeing a solid-looking result. It’s not...
