One of the best Sony camcorders we've seen in a long time, and an excellent choice for anyone who wants High Definition video

Excellent video, easy to use, good build quality and features

Microphone not the best, hard drive could be bigger

Sony Handycam HDR-SR1

A very attractive high-end consumer camcorder, this is easy to use out-of-the-box, offering great features even if video quality could be better.

Good-quality HD video ; Records in 5.1 Dolby surround sound ; HDMI-out port ; Excellent touchscreen menu and GUI ; Professional manual adjustable ring ; External mic and earpiece ports ; Can store both video and pictures on harddisk

Premium price ; New AVC format lacks editing software ; Needs PC to archive footage when out of space ; Grainy pictures in low light ; Bulky

Making use of a harddisk drive saves a lot of hassle from storing and keeping tapes and discs, though you'll need a PC for when you run out of space. There are many cool features including Dual Recording Mode which lets you shoot pictures as you record...

Sony Handycam HDR-SR1 review: Sony Handycam HDR-SR1

Sony Handycam HDR-SR1

Hard disk holds about four hours of best-quality HD video; sharp, saturated, low-noise video; excellent build quality; fast, smooth focus with effective image stabilization.

Mediocre still photos; frequent motion artifacts in video; lame but necessary bundled software; no windscreen filter for microphone.

The Sony Handycam HDR-SR1's combination of hard disk capacity, easy adapatability, great design, and a broad feature set make it the consumer HD model to beat for 2006.

One beautiful camera, with one awful flaw.

Sony Handycam HDR-SR1

This was the only HiDef camcorder with HDD. I did not have much of a choice in this category and I did not want to wait so went ahead and bought this model.

Easy to use. Good quality video recording

Grainy picture in low light. I bought my first camcorder in 1997 with Hi8 technology. I had the same problem back then and it still continues after almost 10 years. Could be a little lighter and smaller with higher optical zoom. Also download to PC is...

Sony Handycam HDR-SR1

Does anyone know how to download footage onto an external hard-drive or dock, other than just a PC. I am having great trouble wondering how I am going to travel with a laptop!!

Beautiful day quality ; Feels solid

Terrible grainy, dark night quality ; A bit bulky ; HATE having to have access to a PC, when recording on HD, hard drive fills up pretty quickly and you need a PC quick

Can anyone tell me the approximate time it takes to download the whole 30GB memory to a top of the range, high-spec laptop via USB2.0?

Sony Handycam HDR-SR1

just purchased this camcorder last week, love it, absolutely stunning pic; beautiful HD picture and easy to access the footage; still learning how to use it and will post more comments later on

Beautiful HD picture; Easy to use; feel comfortable with the handle; HD quality picture is unmatchable compared to other camcorders

Not so good still image; fingerpritns on LCD display; bit bulky and a bit pricy

Sony Handycam HDR-SR1

Bought this camera after purchasing the JVC GZ-505 and experiencing poor SD performance on my 106cm Plasma. Filmed with this camera and connected to my HDTV and was blown away by the quality.

Excellent quality ; Still photos come out great ; Steady Cam better than other cameras ; Menus easy once used for a while

HDMI does not work with three TVs I tested ; Touch screen leaves finger prints ; No real editing software yet

OK

It has a small size which is convenient for taking it with you on holidays, but 30 hours of recoding to the hard drive in high quality is possibly too small, so you may need to carry an external hdd or laptop to transfer your movies to or record in a...

Offers a 30GB hard disk for movie storage which is sufficient for 30 hours of taping.

MP4 standard is good but it would be great if the Sony camcorder could also record in other formats such as avi, Xvid or DivX.
